Eeuwenoude traditie in de jaren negentig ontdekt
Al in het jaar 496 werd 14 februari uitgeroepen tot de dag van de liefde. De oudste documentaties van Valentijnskaarten komen uit het jaar 1400 en zijn te zien in bijvoorbeeld het British Museum. In Nederland is het liefdesfeest nog betrekkelijk nieuw: pas halverwege de jaren negentig werd het hier een groot commercieel succes.
De bloemisten hadden allang gezien dat er goede zaken werden gedaan over de grens rondom Valentijnsdag. Decennia lang probeerde ze de bloemen te marketen, maar tevergeefs. In de jaren ’70, ’80 en ’90 stuntten ze met acties waarbij ze op 14 februari gratis bloemen uitdeelden aan bijvoorbeeld alle vrouwelijke kamerleden, alle wegenwachters of alle chauffeurs van het openbaar vervoer. Door deze sympathieke acties haalden ze regelmatig de kranten, maar echte populariteit bleef uit. In 1981 was er slechts één drukkerij die Valentijnskaarten aanbood, hij drukte dat jaar 25.000 kaarten.
Uiteindelijk waren het niet de bloemisten maar de kranten die zorgden voor de grote commerciële doorslag. De krant bood de mogelijkheid om een liefdesboodschap te plaatsen in een speciale Valentijnsrubriek en dat werd een gigantisch succes. Het volgende jaar werden er rond 14 februari meer dan twee miljoen kaartjes en cadeau’s verzonden.
